Meet the Obesity Clinical Research Team

Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly

I am an endocrinologist with a wide interest in the action of hormones and how they can be perturbed in human disease states.

My research has been concerned with the elucidation of the basic causes of obesity and Type 2 diabetes at a molecular level and the translation of those discoveries into improved diagnosis and therapy for patients. My work has uncovered several previously unrecognised genetic causes of these diseases including some that are amenable to specific treatment.

Dr Aggie Jakubowska MBBS, MRCP, FRCPath

I am a Clinical Research Associate and a Specialist Registrar in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine. I am currently completing a PhD under supervision of Professor O’Rahilly.

My research focuses on understanding how inherited changes in the body’s structural support around fat cells can affect how these cells function, and how this may lead to insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease. I am involved in the design and delivery of clinical studies, including detailed metabolic assessments and studies in individuals with rare genetic conditions affecting connective tissue.
